Last week, AISG had the pleasure of welcoming Erika Rosenberg, a renowned Argentinian journalist and writer with Jewish roots, as part of our Speaker Series program. Erika's visit was an extraordinary opportunity for our students to learn from someone passionate about preserving history and standing up against injustice.

Erika's journey to become a prominent figure in the field of Holocaust storytelling was deeply influenced by her parents' experiences. Born to German immigrants who fled Germany in 1935, Erika was inspired by their courage to uncover the untold stories of the Holocaust. She travels the world, honoring the memory of those who suffered and preserving history for future generations.

During her visit, Erika shared the incredible actions of Emilie and Oskar Schindler, documented in the memoir Where Light and Shadow Meet, which she wrote with Emilie Schindler. As depicted in the movie, Schindler’s List, the Schindlers saved the lives of 1,200 Polish-Jewish refugees during the Holocaust. Erika's close relationship with the author, Emily Schindler, led her to translate Emilie’s powerful stories, and she encouraged our young learners to value unity, bravery, and compassion.

The collaboration and support of the Argentinian, German, and Israeli consulates made Erika's visit possible. The Consulate Generals of each country attended the event and emphasized the importance of teaching students about history, empathy, and being active participants in building a better future.

Erika’s visit also included captivating discussions and interactive workshops with AISG students, caregivers, and teachers. Notably, her ‘lunch and learn’ sessions with IBDP History students and English Literature students, who are currently reading The Book Thief, provided deeper understanding of its themes and historical context, enhancing their learning experience.
